| Inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation services are available to Sanford patients. A specific Program is designed for each patient, which includes education and an exercise program. Education is offered to both the patient and their families. Each topic is presented in a classroom setting to encourage group participation. Topics include risk factors of heart disease, exercise and heart disease, stress management, ten steps to weight loss, the food pyramid and learning about cholesterol and sodium. Active participation in exercise is an essential step to resuming a full and active lifestyle following a cardiac event. Classes meet three times a week and include walking on treadmills, stationary bicycles, muscle strengthening and endurance programs. Psychological and emotional aspects of heart disease play an important role in recovery. The Cardiac Support Group meets regularly, offering patients an opportunity to discuss their experience and feelings with other heart patients and health professionals. |
